Chris Powell is at it again. He fancies himself the town crier east of the river, proclaiming all that is wrong with government and alarming citizens with his stories of the fleecing of the Connecticut taxpayer.
Powell's favorite target is the public service worker, who he has referred to as the "sacred cow." He recently said they came away from the negotiating process "unscathed" ("Time's up for Rell," April 25).
Oyez, oyez, oyez! The public service workers have just negotiated a tentative agreement with the Rell administration for a savings to the state of $700 million. Those are major savings for the state and its citizens. Powell has called them "modest givebacks." Since when is that a modest sum?
But even more important is that they achieved these savings while protecting the vital public services that people need, especially in this economic recession. The last thing we need are cuts to higher education when people are seeking jobs, or cuts to social services when folks are hurting because of the fiscal crisis.
Let's thank the public service workers for being part of the solution and say no thank you to Powell's "Chicken Little" attitude.
